The Richard the Lionheart hand-decorated chess set. The famous Coeur de Lion Richard the Lionheart was known as such even before his accession, because of his military reputation. At only 16, Richard had his own command, putting down rebellions in Poitou against his father, Henry II. Richard was a central Christian commander during the Third Crusade, effectively leading the campaign after the departure of Philip Augustus, and scoring considerable victories against his Muslim counterpart, Saladin. This chess set depicts the characters, particularly Richard and is outstanding in the level of detail in the pieces. Height of King 3 3/4 (95mm), Suits chessboard with square size 2" (51mm). |
